Multi-purpose or multi-overload…should you take a multivitamin? Many multi-vitamins claim they boost immunity, protect the heart, and even, lower the risk of cancer. The truth is very few studies have found that a “multi” can actually lower the risk for disease however they may be worth taking anyway. In a randomized control trial, giving healthy people a multi or placebo (fake pill), taking a multi with 100% of the Daily Value for vitamins and minerals was found to be a convenient and cost-effective way of filling in the gaps that exist between what you need and what you actually consume from food (J. Am. Coll. Nutr. 19: 613, 2000). Particularly, most of us fall short when it comes to iron, vitamin B-12, vitamin D and folic acid. A multi will include all of these and you can get them from just one tablet or capsule. The wellness take…In addition to taking a multi to get those missing vitamins and minerals from your diet, try eating more fruits and vegetables every day. Focus particularly on eating green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale and try combining fruit high in vitamin C, like oranges or strawberries, with your iron-enriched cereal in the morning for maximum vitamin absorption!
