Hidden Benefits of Water

Posted by Drew Mandish on

Since we were children, we've been told to be sure to drink at least eight 8 ounce cups of water per day, or something there about. However, if you're like two-thirds of Americans, you're not drinking enough H2O. According to a dietitian from Boston College, we need even more than eight cups of water on days in which we are active. You can find the exact breakdown of how much water you need on days with varying amounts of activity here. Some essential water functions include: (via USGS)

  • A vital nutrient to the life of every cell
  • Regulates our body temperature
  • Metabolizes and transports carbohydrates and proteins
  • Forms saliva
  • Lubricates joints
  • Assists in flushing waste
If water plays such an important role in many functions of the human body, why do many of us fail to drink enough daily? Too bland? Eight glasses is too many? We think the reason people don't drink enough water is because they don't realize the additional benefits that water can bring. Let's shed light on just a few of those benefits. Weight Loss Forget the no-carb or salad only diets; drinking enough water can help you lose weight. Drinking water helps you feel more full, allowing you to consume less calories throughout the day. Instead of that midnight snack, grab a bottle of water from the fridge! Clearer Skin Water can help flush out  acne causing and pore clogging toxins, reducing the risk of pimples. Better Workouts You lose water while working out through sweat, which can lead to dehydration. Being dehydrated will lead to shorter and less productive workouts, so be sure to remember to bring a water bottle! Energy Booster Dehydration is one of the most common symptoms of dehydration. To fight that 2:30 feeling, try drinking a little extra water. Hangover Help Alcohol is a diuretic, which causes liquids to be pushed out of the body. As you could guess, when much of the liquid in your body is missing, you're likely not going to feel well. To prevent a hangover after a night of drinking, down a glass of water before bed. To help symptoms subside, drink a glass of water immediately upon waking up.   With all of the benefits of water, the next time you're in need of hydration, skip the sugary beverage and grab a glass of water. Whether it's clearer skin, more energy or help with your diet, remember the benefits above and drink some high quality H2O,
